Job-Seeking During a Pandemic

Job-Seeking During a Pandemic

I was recently invited to participate as a panelist in the 7th Annual Green Jobs Forum, organized by Leaders in Energy. Our session, facilitated by @Beth Offenbacker and shared with @CatherineMcLean and @William Ellis, focused on tips for job-seekers in the green sector from the perspective of recruiters. Last week I talked about the macro context for green jobs. Today, I’m sharing some top tips, tools and resources for job-seekers.

1. Be tech savvy or willing to learn.

  • Companies are increasingly tech-based or tech-enabled. At a minimum you need to be curious about tech and comfortable around it. Understanding the implications of AI or virtual reality on your field is a plus.

  • Soft skills are highly valued. Skills such as emotional intelligence, team building, adaptability will set you apart from other candidates with the same technical skills.

2. Know yourself.

  • Become self-aware about your aspirations and constraints.

  • Know your strengths -- use a tool like StrengthsFinder to learn more about yourself.

  • Understand the conditions under which you thrive - small company or big corporation? Innovative or structured? Are you ready and willing to relocate when working from home is over?

  • Think about what you want to learn in your next job.

3. Get professional help with your resumé and LInkedIn profile.

  • This is critical especially if you apply to organizations that use Applicant Tracking System or tech-enabled screening. Total Rebrand can help you decipher a job description, and prepare a resumé and cover letter that fit.

4. Persevere.

  • Focus on what you can control: applications, networking, learning new skills.

  • Be constantly learning. Employers want people who show their dedication, and their ability to adapt and keep on learning. Find ways to upgrade your skills: LinkedIn for example has a variety of online classes and Acumen Academy focuses on learning for social impact.

  • Attend online networking events and contribute useful information that benefits others when the chat or Q&A allows.

  • Pursue internships and volunteer opportunities or create your own. They are a great way to learn what it’s really like to work in your dream organization, and to expand your network.

  • Reconnect with hiring managers from past recruitment processes by sharing an article or an event that is particularly relevant to them. They might be delighted to hear from you.

5. Be kind to yourself and reach out for support.

  • No one has lived through a pandemic like this before. There is a lot of uncertainty for everyone. We are all learning.
